As some of you may know, I left my job at a Multi-National Company (MNC) and moved on to work in a Small and Medium Enterprise (SME). Working in an SME often means juggling multiple roles with minimal systems or structure. Things move fast, and many tasks are still done manually or based on individual experience. That’s why I started exploring how AI tools can help me automate tasks and improve productivity.
Using AI for Automation
Over time, I’ve used AI to automate repetitive tasks like data entry, form filling, and reporting. For example, I use AI to generate reports in Excel. Eventually, I used AI tools to help me write Excel macros that automate many of these tasks. I’ve also shared these automations with my colleagues to improve team efficiency. I often work on projects involving clients and colleagues in China. In the past, language was a barrier, especially when it came to technical terms specific to our industry. Now, I use AI-powered translation tools to help with email communications, documentation, and technical content. Beyond my full-time job, I’ve started offering freelance automation services. With help from AI, I’m able to build dashboards and automate workflows involving Excel and Google Sheets. One of my latest side projects is a Telegram expense claim bot. Submitting claims after my China work trips used to be a headache. I had to keep the receipts, enter the amounts into excel and also compile the receipts into a PDF. It was tedious and time-consuming. So I built a Telegram bot to handle this process. It reads receipt images, extracts key information, and compiles an Excel and a PDF of the receipts automatically. A large part of the development was done with the help of AI.
